Juste après la seconde guerre mondiale les matériaux manquaient et les artistes devaient s’approvisionner comme ils le pouvaient en châssis, toiles et couleurs. Dans le cas de « Le fauteuil », anecdote qui nous a été rapportée par Mme Minaux, l’artiste s’est servi d’un torchon de cuisine en toile dite « métisse », c’est-à-dire mi-coton, mi-lin pour réaliser son tableau. Celle-ci peut facilement être identifiée sur la tranche du tableau par le dessin géométrique rouge/blanc caractéristique des torchons de cuisine de l’époque.

Word from the merchant

Just after World War II, materials were in short supply and artists had to find what they could in terms of frames, canvases and colours. In the case of "Le fauteuil", an anecdote told to us by Mme Minaux, the artist used a kitchen towel made of "métisse" fabric, i.e. half cotton, half linen, to create his painting. The cloth can easily be identified on the edge of the painting by the red/white geometric pattern typical of kitchen towels of the period.
